The Health Promotion Model Of Florence Nightingale

While it is known that nursing has been around for a long time, and deemed one of the most trusted and respected professions in healthcare, nursing has gone through many changes. Dating back to the early stages where mothers tend to their infants, to the nuns attending to the sick and dying, to Florence Nightingale who founded modern nursing, it has evolved to what modern nursing is as we see today. Besides Florence Nightingale, many theorists have made their mark in nursing, including Nola Pender. Born in 1941 in Lansing, Michigan, Nola Pender started her career in nursing in West Suburban Hospital School of Nursing where she received her nursing diploma. She continued her studies in Michigan State University where she obtained a B.S. in nursing and M.A in human growth and development, and earning a Ph. D. from Northwestern University. Pender’s Health Promotion Model (HPM) originated from research done during her doctoral dissertation. Pender stated that health is defined â€Å"†¦as a positive dynamic state rather than simply the absence of disease† (â€Å"Health Promotion Model - Nursing Theory,† 2013). Through her research, she believed that by modifying the behaviors and promoting a positive well-being, many of the problems or illnesses can be prevented before they occur.
